All second grade classes are currently studying Earth and her neighbors in A Space Odyssey unit. This week, students visited the iLab for a soil investigation.
Mrs. Scott’s class visited today and observed soil in order to decide what makes up “dirt”. Once students had identified the parts of soil, they put on their critical thinking hats and examined three “mystery soil” samples to determine what Maryland region the soil could represent – the Mountain Region, the Piedmont Plateau, or the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Students supported their reasoning with evidence from their soil sample and non-fiction reading selection.

I heard about these experiments last night and how lucky one group was to find worms. Which region did that represent?

Soil Sample 1 was from the Atlantic Coastal Plain. We found sand, shells, twigs and soil in this sample.

Which region is Lutherville? What did you find in that region?
