Our first graders are working on respectful collaboration and communication. One of their strategies is to use hand signals to show what they are thinking. Mrs. Jenkins’ class shared their signals with me this week in the iLab.
Our primary classes have been visiting the iLab for one last lesson, and this one combines chemistry with a favorite outdoor activity. Students read a set of directions, then combined water, paint, and plaster of Paris to create a batch of sidewalk chalk. After researching and writing about polar bears, students used Crisco and buckets of ice water to explore how blubber helps polar bears survive in the cold temperatures of the Arctic. Mrs. Myers’ first grade students worked with Mrs. Smith’s third graders to create sensory books from a monarch butterfly’s point of view. Students observed the habitats on our school grounds, then collaborated to author and illustrate booklets to show what butterflies touch, taste, hear, smell, and see. The books are fantastic!
